Victoria construction firms pressured to fund gang-related events
Firms involved in Victoria's Big Build projects have been pressured to fund a boxing promotion linked to an outlaw motorcycle gang. Geoffrey Watson, a CFMEU investigator, described this as a significant instance of gang infiltration in the construction sector. Union delegate Joel Leavitt allegedly used his position to solicit funds for a catering event, which subcontractors ultimately paid. Police have since abandoned their investigation due to difficulties in gathering evidence from subcontractors. Leavitt is also linked to Hardcore Promotions, organizing boxing events and pressuring subcontractors for sponsorship. Concerns about corruption in the construction industry extend beyond Victoria, with warnings from former CFMEU figure Mario Barrios about similar issues in New South Wales.
