Victoria Public Market to close for grocery store development

The Victoria Public Market in downtown Victoria will close, and vendors have six months to relocate. The building owner, Townline, plans to turn the market into a Canadian grocery store by early 2026. The market has been operating for over ten years at Douglas and Fisgard Streets. Marie Takahashi, who runs Two Crows Craft Foods, shared her feelings about the change. She has been at the market for a year and a half. The owner has offered vendors a deal to leave within 90 days instead of the full six months, including waived back rent. Takahashi expressed sadness over losing small, immigrant-owned businesses in the market. Townline president Daryl Simpson explained that many tenants faced challenges during the global pandemic, leading to many empty spaces. He believes the new grocery store will create jobs and add value to the community. Townline might also offer some space for current tenants and other retailers in the future. Maryanne Carmack, owner of Roast Meat & Sandwich Shop, has been a vendor since the market opened. She is hopeful for a positive outcome despite the unsettling news. Many vendors are feeling emotional about the changes, as they are passionate about their work and the community they serve. “It’s heartbreaking,” Takahashi stated.
