A 41-year-old man from Victoria has been charged with making death threats and antisemitic comments against a federal member of parliament (MP). The Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced the charges on Tuesday. The man was accused of using social media to threaten the MP multiple times between January 7 and February 19, 2025. He faces one count of using a carriage service to menace, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. He is also charged with threatening to cause serious harm to a Commonwealth public official, which could result in up to seven years behind bars. He has been granted bail and is due to appear in court in Dandenong on June 19. During the investigation, the AFP executed a search warrant at his home in Officer, a suburb of Melbourne, and seized an electronic device. The charges were brought by Special Operation Avalite, which focuses on investigating antisemitism. Another man, a 33-year-old from Reservoir, was charged last month for similar offenses toward a different federal MP. This man is also alleged to have contacted a Victorian state MP. He is scheduled to appear in court in April.
