Vijayapura Municipal Corporation members disqualified for non-disclosure
All 35 members of the Vijayapura Municipal Corporation have been disqualified. This decision was made on March 24 by Regional Commissioner Sanjay Shettennavar. The reason for the disqualification is that none of the members declared their assets, which is required by law. The political breakdown of the members includes 17 from the BJP, 10 from Congress, 1 from JD(S), 2 from AIMIM, and 5 Independents. Fresh elections for the city corporation are expected to take place soon. The members were elected in 2022, while the Mayor and Deputy Mayor were chosen in January 2024. Mehzabeen Horti from Congress was elected as Mayor, and Dinesh Halli was elected as Deputy Mayor. Recently, the Kalaburagi bench of the Karnataka High Court instructed the State Government to take action against this violation of rules. This court order followed a complaint by former member Prakash Mirji Mainuddin, who pointed out the failure of members to declare their assets after their election.
