Violent fan clashes mar Georgia-Armenia Nations League match
Georgia won their Nations League play-off match against Armenia with a score of 6-1. However, the celebration turned chaotic after the game. Fans clashed violently in the stands, and many rushed onto the pitch once the match ended at Tbilisi's Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena. Police intervened when objects were thrown between supporters. Initially, it appeared that fans wanted to celebrate with players. The chaos could lead to punishments for both football federations. The match was officiated by Premier League referee Anthony Taylor and secured Georgia's place in the second tier of the Nations League with a 9-1 aggregate victory. Notable players included Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who scored Georgia’s sixth goal. Earlier this week, Georgia and Armenia announced plans to jointly host the 2029 under-20 World Cup. Georgia had a strong start with an early own goal and continued to score with goals from Mikautadze, Chakvetadze, and Kiteishvilli. Armenia managed just one goal through Edgar Sevikyan. Looking ahead, Georgia will focus on World Cup qualifying matches against Turkey, Bulgaria, and Spain. Armenia will prepare to face the Republic of Ireland, Hungary, and Portugal. Other Nations League results showed Slovenia beating Slovakia and Ireland defeating Bulgaria. Kosovo promoted to the next level after winning against Iceland. In League A, Greece relegated Scotland, while Belgium avoided dropping after a comeback against Ukraine. The next Nations League season will begin in 2026-27.
