Virgin Media transitions to streaming for new customers
Virgin Media is making changes to how customers watch TV, moving more towards streaming services. This comes after Sky announced that most new devices are now internet-based instead of relying on satellite dishes. Virgin's upgrade involves a shift from its TV 360 mini devices to the Virgin Stream box for new customers. This change started last year. The TV 360 mini devices allowed users to watch live and on-demand content in various rooms, similar to Sky's offerings. However, Virgin Media is now favoring the Stream box, which launched in 2022. The Virgin Stream box provides easy access to streaming apps like Disney+ and Netflix. It can be shipped directly to customers, allowing for simple self-installation. This is more convenient and cost-effective than needing an engineer visit. While Virgin Media has not officially announced the end of the TV 360 mini system, the move to promote the Stream box suggests a stronger focus on online streaming. The overall trend indicates that television consumption is shifting away from traditional methods, and platforms like Freeview could face challenges in the future.
