A lack of Vitamin B12 can lead to several serious neurological problems. One of the effects of low Vitamin B12 is forgetfulness, even in young people. Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat from AIIMS highlights that this vitamin is crucial for memory and cognitive health. Individuals may struggle to find the right words or remember where they placed items. This issue can vary in duration, depending on the severity of the deficiency. Another serious concern is that not having enough Vitamin B12 increases the risk of stroke. The vitamin helps regulate homocysteine levels in the body. High homocysteine can lead to blood vessel inflammation and clots, which raises the chance of stroke. This risk applies to individuals of all ages, including children and pregnant women. Vision problems can also arise from Vitamin B12 deficiency. It may damage the optic nerve, leading to blurred vision. This condition, called optic neuropathy, can often be treated effectively with B12 supplements. People may also experience tingling in their hands and feet due to a lack of Vitamin B12. This sensation, known as paresthesia, occurs when the vitamin is low and disrupts the production of myelin, which protects nerves. Lastly, Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause muscle cramps due to poor nerve function and decreased red blood cell production. It is important to monitor intake of this crucial vitamin for overall health.
