Voters in 10 states decide on abortion rights measures in 2024 election

fastcompany.com November 6, 2024, 11:01 PM UTC

In the 2024 election, voters in 10 states decided on 11 abortion-related measures. Abortion rights were upheld in New York, Missouri, Maryland, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, and Nevada. Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota maintained their existing bans.

Missouri voters overturned their abortion ban, establishing reproductive rights in the state constitution. Nevada's amendment allows abortion until fetal viability but requires a second vote in 2026 to take effect. Arizona amended its law to prevent interference before fetal viability.

In Florida, a proposed amendment to protect abortion rights failed by just 3%. South Dakota rejected a measure to guarantee abortion rights in early trimesters. Nebraska passed a 12-week abortion ban while rejecting a proposal for rights until viability.
