Voters in nine states decide on abortion rights measures in key elections
Voters in nine states are deciding on ballot measures to guarantee abortion rights in their state constitutions. This could change access for over 7 million women in states like Arizona, Florida, and Missouri, where current restrictions exist.
Abortion rights advocates have won all seven measures since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Currently, 13 states enforce total abortion bans, while others have strict limits. Despite this, the number of abortions has slightly increased due to the use of pills and support networks.
In Florida, a 60% vote is needed to pass the amendment, complicating efforts. Nebraska has competing measures, and in South Dakota, some regulations would remain. Other states, like Colorado and Maryland, aim to enshrine existing access laws in their constitutions.
