Voters in nine US states decide on abortion rights in 2024 elections

apnews.com November 5, 2024, 11:01 AM UTC

Voters in nine U.S. states are deciding on ballot measures to guarantee abortion rights in their state constitutions during the 2024 elections. These measures could reverse existing bans and restrictions affecting over 7 million women.

Abortion rights advocates have won all seven measures since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Currently, 13 states enforce total bans, while others have strict limits, but the number of abortions has slightly increased due to pills and travel assistance.

In Florida, supporters need at least 60% approval to pass their measure, while Nebraska has competing proposals. Other states, like Colorado and Maryland, aim to enshrine existing abortion access laws.
