Voters in seven states approve abortion rights amendments in recent elections
In recent elections, voters in ten states considered amendments to guarantee abortion rights in their constitutions. Seven states approved these measures, while three rejected them, significantly changing the landscape of abortion access in the U.S.
Missouri voters approved an amendment allowing abortion access up to 24 weeks, reversing one of the strictest bans in the country. Arizona also passed a measure to protect abortion rights up to viability, challenging its existing 15-week limit. In contrast, Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota rejected proposals to expand abortion rights, maintaining strict limitations.
Several states, including Colorado and New York, codified existing abortion protections. Colorado's amendment prevents local restrictions and allows Medicaid coverage for abortions. New York's measure strengthens protections against discrimination related to reproductive healthcare, responding to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
