Wadettiwar demands Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra assembly

Vijay Wadettiwar, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Maharashtra, is pushing for the appointment of a Leader of Opposition (LOP) as the assembly's budget session nears its end. He believes that the lack of an LOP weakens democracy in the state. In his address, he stressed that the position is crucial for keeping the ruling Mahayuti government accountable, especially since they have a large majority. Wadettiwar called on Speaker Rahul Narwekar to make this appointment before the session ends. He warned that failing to do so would set a bad precedent for allowing legislative work without proper opposition. He stated that a functioning LOP is essential to protect the interests of all citizens in Maharashtra. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde acknowledged the importance of both ruling and opposition parties but did not give a timeline for when the LOP will be appointed. The Speaker confirmed that appointments will follow the legislative rules. Wadettiwar also criticized the BJP-led government's handling of law and order. He accused the government of targeting dissenters, using the example of comedian Kunal Kamra, who faced backlash for his remarks about Shinde. He questioned whether the government is acting like a democracy or a dictatorship. He pointed out the arrest of former journalist Prashant Koratkar, suggesting it was delayed and indicative of police failings. Wadettiwar raised concerns about whether similar actions would be taken against other public figures who make controversial statements. He argued that the government is inconsistent in its responses, which undermines justice for the people of Maharashtra.
