Waikato River water samples sent to Australia for arsenic testing after elevated levels detected
Authorities are sending Waikato River water samples to Australia for testing after detecting slightly elevated arsenic levels. The levels, while safe, were found to be between 0.0189 and 0.0256 milligrams per liter, above the maximum acceptable value of 0.01 mg/L. The Waikato Regional Council noted a small increase in dissolved arsenic, which may be harder for treatment plants to remove. The testing will focus on the forms of arsenic present, particularly arsenic 3, which is more difficult to filter out. Experts stated that while the situation is unusual, the elevated levels are not a significant health risk for short periods. Drinking water standards are designed to protect long-term health, and current levels are still within a safe range.
