Walmart faces escalating thefts from "cash-cash" scams
A shopper recently stole over $8,000 worth of items from a Walmart in Ohio using a clever scam. The thief managed to trick a store employee into processing a fake credit card payment. This incident involved the man taking 37 products from the electronics department. The scam is known as the "cash-cash" trick. It works by deceiving employees into issuing a false receipt, making it look like the payment was successful when it was not. The fraudster often distracts the employee and then instructs them to press a specific key on the register. Walmart is becoming increasingly concerned about this type of scam, as it has reportedly cost the company thousands of dollars. In February, another person was caught trying to use a fake credit card for almost $1,500 worth of electronic products. In addition to the cash-cash scam, other frauds are affecting Walmart. One is called the “BIN” scam, where criminals guess customer credit card information to make unauthorized purchases. Some Walmart shoppers in Alabama have also experienced losses due to hackers accessing their accounts with a local credit union. Despite having fraud prevention measures in place, the credit union emphasized that these scams are difficult to fully prevent. Walmart has refunded many customers affected by these issues, acknowledging the frustration caused by fraudulent transactions. Another rising issue involves card skimming devices, which can be attached to self-checkout machines. These small devices can steal money without customers noticing. Authorities are warning shoppers to be cautious, as these scams continue to pose risks at large retail stores.
