Wapda House in Lahore turned off lights for Earth Hour
The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) in Lahore participated in Earth Hour by turning off the lights at Wapda House for one hour on Saturday. This event took place from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Wapda Chairman, retired Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani, emphasized that this act is a reminder of everyone's responsibility to lower carbon emissions and address climate change. Wapda is leading Pakistan's efforts towards cleaner energy. Currently, it has a capacity of 9,500 megawatts of renewable hydropower. The authority is working on major projects like the Diamer-Basha Dam and Mohmand Dam. These projects aim to improve water storage, generate more energy, and decrease reliance on fossil fuels. Wapda plans to add 9.7 million acre-feet of water storage and double its hydropower generation to include an additional 10,000 megawatts of renewable electricity by the year 2029-30.
