Waqf Act amendment controversy ignites political tensions in Karnataka
In Bengaluru, a political conflict has erupted over the state's resolution opposing the central government's proposed changes to the Waqf Act. The BJP has criticized the government, accusing it of engaging in appeasement politics. They claim that these changes would protect illegal land grabbers and encroachments. BJP state president BY Vijayendra accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of shielding those involved in a "waqf scam." He stated that Congress leaders are misusing the Waqf Act to illegally acquire valuable properties. Vijayendra also condemned the government’s decision to mandate 4% reservation for Muslims in government contracts, calling it a form of appeasement towards a specific community. In response, health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao dismissed these accusations, saying the BJP is discriminating against minorities. He defended the government's right to oppose the amendments, claiming they take away important powers from the state. Medical education minister Sharan Prakash Patil added that the proposed changes are aimed at creating distrust among communities. The BJP also criticized the government's recent electricity tariff hike, claiming it burdens citizens while pandering to certain groups. Vijayendra voiced concern for farmers affected by the rising costs and unreliable power supply. Conversely, Congress officials pointed out that a majority of consumers benefit from free electricity under the Gruha Jyothi scheme, arguing that the BJP is misrepresenting the situation.
