Washington D.C. prosecutor launches election fraud investigation
The interim U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., Ed Martin, announced the creation of a new office to investigate election fraud. This comes amid unclear authority regarding his jurisdiction and whether he has consulted the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section. Martin's email stated that the new Special Unit Election Accountability has already opened one investigation. He emphasized the need to restore public confidence in election systems, despite studies showing that election fraud is rare in the U.S. Martin has a controversial background, having supported the January 6 Capitol attack participants. He has also faced challenges within the Justice Department, including staff resignations and potential cuts in the Public Integrity Section.
