Waukegan's STEAM program provides hands-on science learning
Children in Waukegan are enjoying hands-on science activities through the Park District’s STEAM program. On a recent day at Bevier Park, kids aged 6 to 12 learned about basic scientific methods with fun projects. The kids created "scientific journals" using paper and yarn. After making their journals, they looked at different slides containing insects and plants under microscopes. They took notes and sketched what they saw. One second grader, Theo Farias, was excited about his discoveries. “It’s really cool,” he said. First grader Madelin Henriquez added, “I’m drawing a picture of what it looks like.” Jonathan Cochrane, the recreation specialist leading the class, aims to spark curiosity in the young participants. He explained how to fold paper and make their journals before using the microscopes. This introduction helps the children explore science and think critically. Parents appreciate the program as well. Joe Farias, Theo's dad, remarked on the importance of hands-on learning, saying it adds a valuable dimension to education. Lucy Orozco, another parent, noted how her children enjoy the classes while learning. Upcoming sessions include building a “grabber” tool and exploring topics from the natural world like weather and spiders. The final session of the STEAM program will take place on April 1 at Bevier Park.
