A hurricane watch is now in effect for the Cayman Islands, and a tropical storm warning has been issued for Jamaica as a weather system in the Caribbean is expected to strengthen.
The National Hurricane Center reports the system, currently named "Potential Tropical Cyclone Eighteen," is about 275 miles south of Jamaica and moving north. It has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and could become a hurricane soon.
Heavy rainfall is anticipated in Jamaica and southern Cuba, with totals of 3 to 9 inches possible. Florida and parts of the southeastern U.S. may also experience heavy rains later this week.
