A weather system in the southwestern Caribbean is expected to strengthen this week. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Jamaica, and a hurricane watch has been issued for the Cayman Islands.
The system, located about 345 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica, has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. It is moving northeast and is forecast to become a tropical storm by Monday.
Heavy rainfall is anticipated in Jamaica and southern Cuba, with totals of 3 to 9 inches possible. Florida and parts of the southeastern U.S. may also experience heavy rains later in the week.
