Weight-loss drug Wegovy now sold in Irish pharmacies

thejournal.ie

Wegovy, a new weight-loss drug, is now available in Ireland. This medicine is made by the same company that produces Ozempic, a diabetes treatment. Wegovy is a weekly injection that helps people control their appetite and feel full. Patients with a prescription can buy the pre-filled injector pen at pharmacies. However, it will not be available for medical card holders immediately. The active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide, which is found in Ozempic, but Wegovy has a higher dose to better assist with weight loss. Donal O’Shea, the HSE's expert on obesity, confirmed Wegovy's launch in Ireland. He noted that while it is not a "wonder drug," it can help patients manage their weight. O’Shea said that making these treatments available is an important first step, and efforts are being made to include the drug in healthcare schemes. The manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, is reportedly willing to make Wegovy available through the community drug scheme for medical card holders. O’Shea also mentioned potential side effects like nausea and vomiting, which can occur if the drug is not prescribed correctly. Experts hope that the cost of Wegovy, which can be as high as €200, will decrease in the future. Pharmacist Sheena Mitchell urged the government to create policies for easier access to the drug and improve preventative healthcare measures. O’Shea added that the HSE would support patients who need the drug for serious health concerns.
