Weight loss surgeries rise, but approval challenges persist
Bariatric surgeries have increased since insurance coverage began in 2019, with many patients now able to afford the procedures. Kolkata's Dr. Ratul Pal underwent surgery in October 2024, reducing his weight from 116 kg to 98 kg, and improving his health significantly. Despite the rise in surgeries, approval processes remain complex. Patients often face long waiting periods, especially with pre-existing conditions. Insurers require extensive documentation and may deny claims based on eligibility criteria, leading to delays. Challenges persist as insurers still follow older BMI standards, despite international guidelines suggesting lower thresholds. While some corporate policies offer immediate coverage, many patients must navigate a cumbersome approval process that can involve multiple consultations and documentation.
