Welfare cuts threaten support for disabled workers
Workers with learning difficulties are worried about proposed cuts to disability payments. The government plans to make it harder for some people to qualify for these benefits. George Burt, a 32-year-old man from Essex, is one of those affected. He has autism and currently works 12 hours a week at a supermarket. Universal Credit helps him pay his bills, but he fears he might lose this support under the new rules. "It's really important," George said about the payments. "I just don't know what I would do without it." The proposed changes aim to exclude individuals with less severe conditions, including many with learning disabilities. More information about these reforms is expected to be released on Wednesday during the Spring Statement.
