WEMIX blockchain platform lost $6.1 million in hack
WEMIX, a blockchain gaming platform, was hacked last month, leading to the theft of over 8.6 million WEMIX tokens. At the time of the theft, these tokens were worth around $6.1 million. WEMIX's CEO, Kim Seok-Hwan, revealed during a press conference that the cyberattack took place on February 28, 2025. Kim explained that the delay in announcing the breach was to protect players from further losses. He stated that once the hack was identified, the company quickly shut down the affected server and began an investigation. They reported the incident to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Cyber Investigation Unit soon after. The attackers gained access by stealing authentication keys from NILE, an NFT platform. Although the exact method of theft is unclear, it is believed they may have taken the keys from a shared developer repository. After gaining access, hackers planned their attack for two months before managing to withdraw the tokens. These stolen tokens were rapidly laundered through cryptocurrency exchanges. Meanwhile, WEMIX has taken its platform offline to transfer to a more secure environment. The company aims to resume services on March 21, 2025. Additionally, the Digital Asset Exchange Alliance has flagged WEMIX as a cautionary investment and suspended new deposits, a decision WEMIX plans to challenge.
