West Bengal prepares for significant Ram Navami celebrations
In West Bengal, preparations are underway for a grand celebration of Ram Navami on April 6. This year’s event is especially significant as it is the last Ram Navami before the state's elections in 2026. It also coincides with the foundation day of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was established in 1980. Various Hindu groups are planning large celebrations to rally support and promote a sense of unity among Hindus. In the past, organizations like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have been involved in these events. However, this year, they are taking a step back to encourage broader community participation. The celebrations in Kolkata will be lively, featuring traditional music and long processions with saffron flags. Outside the city, enthusiasm is even greater, with organizers planning to hire multiple DJs and incorporate LED-lit idols of Lord Ram into the festivities. Some areas are preparing to use traditional chariots for the processions, which will shower flower petals on crowds. Politically, the context surrounding Ram Navami is tense. The BJP accuses Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) of religious appeasement, following claims of temple desecrations. The TMC has denied these allegations and accuses the BJP of using religion to polarize voters. With about 20,000 events expected across the state, the BJP aims to strengthen its influence among Hindu voters ahead of the elections. They believe their strategy will create a "saffron wave" to help them win in 2026. Meanwhile, TMC leaders express concern that the BJP's focus on religion is a tactical move to cover up their shortcomings in governance.
