West Bengal seeks voice samples from accused CPM leader

The West Bengal government has approached the Calcutta High Court for permission to collect voice samples from Kalatan Dasgupta, a youth leader from the Communist Party of India (CPM). He faces accusations of being involved in a conspiracy to attack junior doctors who were protesting at RG Kar Hospital. The High Court is expected to hear the government's request later this week. Dasgupta was arrested by the Bidhannagar Police in September 2024 after an audio clip was released. The clip, shared by Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh, allegedly features a conversation between Dasgupta and another individual. Ghosh claims the recording shows a plan to target the protesting doctors in order to discredit the state government. Despite the serious allegations, the High Court granted bail to Dasgupta. The court raised concerns about whether an arrest could be justified based solely on the content of a phone call.
