Western Michigan football transforms with new players, coaches
Western Michigan University football is gearing up for the 2025 season with many new players and coaches. On Tuesday, the team introduced over 30 new members as they kicked off their spring practices. Head coach Lance Taylor emphasized the importance of bringing in players who know how to win. He wants to create a winning culture after achieving the team's first bowl game appearance in 2024 since 2021. Taylor understands that with so many new faces, they need to adapt to succeed in the changing world of college football. One of the key additions is new defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary, who previously worked with the Los Angeles Chargers. He brings fresh ideas to the team's defense. Taylor noted that O’Leary incorporates tactics from his past experiences that could enhance their performance this season. On the player side, the Broncos have welcomed 24 new additions, including 14 high school seniors and eight transfers. A few of these transfers were once highly recruited athletes. The quarterback position will see competition between returners Broc Lowry and Mark Konechy, along with JUCO transfer Brady Jones, as they try to fill the gap left by graduated Hayden Wolff. The offensive line will face changes as well. Though they've lost key players, returning seniors will play crucial roles in maintaining their strong run-game strategy. New offensive line coach Joe Pawlak aims to build on their success despite the departures. With five months until their season kicks off, the energy around the program is optimistic. Taylor believes this is a fresh start. He is excited about the competition within the team and encourages everyone to prepare for the upcoming challenges. A Spring Showcase is scheduled for April 12 at Waldo Stadium, with more details to be announced.
