WHO allocates nearly 900,000 mpox vaccine doses to nine African countries
The World Health Organization has allocated nearly 900,000 vaccine doses for nine African countries facing a surge in mpox cases. This follows the declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency in August due to a new variant.
The vaccines will be distributed to the Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Uganda. The Democratic Republic of Congo will receive 85% of the doses, as it is the most affected country.
These vaccines come from European nations, the United States, Canada, and Gavi, which supports vaccine purchases for low-income countries. Over 46,000 confirmed and suspected mpox cases have been reported in Africa this year, with more than 1,000 deaths.
