WHO releases new mpox prevention and management framework
The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a new framework to prevent and manage monkeypox (mpox) outbreaks from 2024 to 2027. In 2022, there were over 66,000 mpox cases in 10 major markets. A current high-mortality outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen 6,500 cases and 345 deaths since January 2024, with half affecting children under 15. The framework aims to eliminate human-to-human transmission through three core objectives.
