WHO report shows malaria remains endemic in 83 countries as cases rise in 2023
A new World Health Organization report shows malaria is still endemic in 83 countries as of 2023, down from 108 in 2000. The decrease includes Timor-Leste and Saudi Arabia, which reported zero indigenous cases for three years. Despite progress, malaria cases rose from 249 million in 2022 to 263 million in 2023. Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported the highest case numbers, with 68 million and 33 million, respectively. The WHO African Region accounts for 95 percent of global malaria deaths. In the South-East Asia Region, deaths fell from 35,000 in 2000 to 6,000 in 2023, with India reporting over two million cases last year.
