Wilson, NY, revitalizing downtown for older residents' needs
The Village of Wilson has joined the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. This means Wilson is committed to making the village easier and better for older residents to live in. The village leaders are taking this step as part of a broader plan to encourage growth. Last week, the village board hired two firms, Insight Architects and LaBella Associates. Their job is to create a plan for revitalizing the downtown area, using a $20,000 grant from the New York Main Street program. The firms will look at how to keep the village’s historic charm while making important updates. They will also analyze the market to find opportunities for local businesses. Mayor Greg Martin noted that having a revitalization plan will help Wilson secure NY Forward funding. This funding can support small businesses in the downtown area. The village has faced challenges recently, including the closure of the Lakeside grocery market due to a fire. Being part of the AARP network will also provide Wilson access to expert advice. By 2034, it is expected that there will be more people aged 65 or older than those under 18 in the U.S. Communities in this network are working to understand what seniors need for a better quality of life, such as transportation, housing, and social activities. Mayor Martin stressed the importance of taking into account the local senior population in the revitalization plan. According to the latest Census data, 20.3% of the town's population and 17% of the village's population are seniors. To gather their opinions, a survey will be distributed, asking seniors what they want and need to stay in Wilson. The 16-question survey will be available at local churches, the library, and town hall. Martin hopes this information will help improve conditions for seniors in the village.
