Wimbledon to replace line judges with AI technology for 2025 tournament
Wimbledon will replace nearly 300 line judges with AI technology for the 2025 tournament, ending a 147-year tradition. The new system, called electronic line calling, will use advanced cameras and microphones to track ball movement on all 18 courts. This technology builds on the Hawk-Eye system used since 2007 and has been adopted at other major tournaments since the COVID pandemic. The All England Lawn Tennis Club confirmed that AI will handle all 'out' and 'fault' calls previously made by line umpires. A video operator will monitor the AI system from a separate room, communicating with the chair umpire. This change reflects a broader trend in tennis towards AI-driven officiating, following similar moves by other tournaments.
