Wind-powered cargo ship begins voyage from England to Canada
The cargo ship Vectis Progress has begun its maiden voyage from England to Canada, equipped with a new wind-powered sail called the AirWing. This technology aims to reduce fuel consumption and emissions during transatlantic journeys. Developed by GT Wings, the AirWing is a 20-meter-high rigid mast that uses internal fans to enhance wind propulsion. The project has already achieved an eight percent reduction in fuel use and aims for ten percent savings on future voyages. The initiative is part of a broader effort to decarbonize maritime transport, supported by £3.7 million in funding from the British government. The International Maritime Organization is also working towards carbon neutrality in the shipping industry by 2050.
