Winnipeg family loses home to fire, seeks assistance

A family of seven in Winnipeg is recovering after a fire destroyed their home on Hathway Road. The fire happened on Saturday night, and the family managed to escape with their lives, but they lost everything they owned. Dillon Hobson ran to a nearby fire station for help as the flames spread. Firefighters arrived around 7:45 p.m. and found the house badly damaged. Dillon and his partner, Mychaella Pratt, along with their five children, were relieved to be safe but overwhelmed by their loss. Larry Hobson, Dillon’s father, shared that he had just spoken with his son before the fire. He said, "Then about 7:30... my phone rang and it was my son crying hysterically." The family had moved into the home only eight months ago, seeking more space for their growing family. Nick Kasper, president of the United Firefighters of Winnipeg, noted a significant rise in structural fires in the city. He mentioned that fire call volumes increased by 87% from 2019 to 2023. Unfortunately, the family did not have insurance and has started a GoFundMe campaign for support. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the family is considering the possibility of foul play.
