Winnipeg youth crime sharply increased in March 2025
Winnipeg is experiencing a significant increase in youth crime this March. Incidents involving young suspects have raised concerns among community members. One recent incident near Portage Avenue involved three teenagers, ages 12, 14, and 15, who assaulted a 23-year-old woman trying to get to work. They have been charged with robbery. Patty Mainville from Rossbrook House noted that there is a rise in drug use and dangerous situations for children in the area. She mentioned how young people have faced challenges even while walking to school. Other serious incidents include a stabbing of a 35-year-old man by a 15-year-old. Statistics show that Manitoba has the highest youth incarceration rate in Canada. In 2023, there were over 1,160 young people in correctional services, significantly higher than in other provinces. Winnipeg's new police chief, Gene Bowers, is committed to tackling this issue. He plans to increase police presence in the community and reopen station duty offices for better public communication. Bowers also announced the formation of a new violent crime team aimed at reducing such incidents. While more police might help, Mainville emphasized the need for creating safe spaces and engaging activities for young people. She pointed out that older youths often involve younger ones in criminal activities, highlighting the importance of providing positive alternatives.
