Wolverhampton youth club helps reduce smartphone dependency
A charity in the West Midlands, called OnSide, is helping young people reduce their smartphone use. A recent survey of 5,200 youth found that many struggled with anxiety, depression, and a desire to connect with others, but didn’t know how to stop using their phones. The Way in Wolverhampton is one of 15 youth clubs across the UK launched by OnSide. These clubs offer free sports and music activities to encourage socializing. Young people have reported feeling isolated since the Covid-19 lockdowns. One teenager, Brennon, shared his experience of struggling to socialize after the pandemic. He spent up to 11 hours a day on his phone while at home. After joining the youth club, he began boxing, which helped improve his confidence and health. He now feels more at ease socializing and looks forward to attending the club. Rebecca Bunger, head of youth work at The Way, emphasized the importance of socializing for young people's development. She believes more investment is needed in youth facilities. Bunger stated that nurturing today's young people is essential for a better future.
