Women candidates seek reforms in Delhi High Court elections
In a historic move, the upcoming executive committee elections of the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) will feature women candidates for the first time. This change follows a Supreme Court order from December 2024 that reserves three positions for female lawyers. The positions include treasurer and two member executive roles. Women candidates are now campaigning under a quota that aims to promote inclusivity and reform. They are focusing on issues such as better facilities and support for women in the legal profession. Advocate Zeba Khair, who is running for treasurer, wants to ensure that funds are allocated in a way that benefits all members, especially women with children. She highlights the need to improve the court's creche services for women lawyers. Another candidate, Advocate Nandita Abrol, emphasizes the need for maternity benefits for female lawyers. She believes women should receive support after childbirth. Both candidates view the Supreme Court’s ruling as a positive step toward equality in the legal field. The response from male candidates has been supportive. Many see increased representation as a way to bring fresh ideas to the executive committee. Senior advocate Kirti Uppal noted that the legal profession has been largely male-dominated for decades, and the reservation can help improve morale among women lawyers. This election has also embraced digital campaigning, with candidates using social media platforms to reach voters. The Supreme Court's mandate for gender representation represents a significant shift in the DHCBA's history. Regardless of the outcome, 2024 is set to be a landmark year for women in the legal profession.
