Women in Sudan die by suicide after rape by paramilitary fighters, activists report
Activists report that several women in Sudan's Gezira state have died by suicide after being raped by paramilitary fighters amid ongoing civil conflict. This follows accusations against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for committing atrocities, including sexual violence.
The UN has documented at least 400 cases of conflict-related sexual violence since the war began in April 2023, with many victims needing medical care. Rights groups are concerned about the rising number of suicides among women fearing further assaults.
The RSF has denied these allegations, claiming they lack evidence. Meanwhile, activists are providing psychological support to women at risk and assisting a 13-year-old girl in urgent need of medical attention after being raped.
