World Rally Championship ends hybrid era, returns to simpler cars for 2025 season
The World Rally Championship (WRC) has ended its hybrid era, which began in 2022, and will now return to simpler, lower-power cars for the 2025 season. The new Rally1 cars will have reduced horsepower and a smaller air restrictor, resulting in a power-to-weight ratio disadvantage compared to the previous hybrid models. The FIA aims to lower costs for teams by eliminating the hybrid system, which has faced challenges related to safety regulations and repair costs. This decision comes despite initial resistance from manufacturers like Hyundai and Toyota, who had supported the hybrid technology. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated that the changes are intended to maintain the sport's appeal while adapting to evolving energy needs. The new regulations are expected to simplify car technology and focus on sustainable fuel.
