WPIAL baseball section play begins today, March 24

Today marks the start of section play for WPIAL baseball, despite a chance of rain and mild temperatures in the mid-50s. Four defending champions will take to the field. In Section 1-5A, Penn-Trafford will host Latrobe at 4 p.m. Both teams have a record of 2-1. Penn-Trafford recently returned from a trip to Florida. Latrobe has moved up from Class 4A this season. North Catholic, the defending champion in Section 1-4A, will play against Ambridge at the No Offseason Complex at 4 p.m. North Catholic has won its only game, while Ambridge is 2-0 after winning two early season matches. Seton LaSalle will face Keystone Oaks in Section 4-3A at Brookline Park, also at 4 p.m. Seton LaSalle has one win and two losses this season, while Keystone Oaks is currently 2-0. Bishop Canevin, the only winner from last year still looking for a victory, will visit Sewickley Academy in Section 3-A. Bishop Canevin is winless at 0-2, while this will be Sewickley Academy's season opener. In Class 6A, section play begins in April. However, North Allegheny is still looking for its first victory after one loss so far. The team will visit Norwin, which is also seeking its first win. Meanwhile, Avonworth continues its trip to Myrtle Beach, playing against Calhoun Academy in South Carolina today. In WPIAL softball, only Class 6A will start section play today. Defending champion Seneca Valley, currently 2-0, will host Woodland Hills, who is 0-1. Hempfield, the other champion, is 3-0 and will visit North Allegheny at 4 p.m. Other games include Butler facing Pine-Richland and Norwin hosting Canon-McMillan, both set for the same time.
