WPIAL teams excel in PIAA basketball playoffs

The WPIAL boys' basketball teams are having a strong run in the PIAA postseason. So far, 13 District 7 teams have reached the state championship game in the past three years. This year, eight teams remain in the playoffs, and some are close to making history. In Class 3A, South Allegheny and Aliquippa are set to face each other in a district title rematch. In 2A, Greensburg Central Catholic will meet Sewickley Academy. If certain teams win their semifinal games, WPIAL could have six teams competing in the PIAA finals. On the girls' side, six teams are still in the hunt for state championships. Peters Township will play South Fayette in Class 5A, and Shady Side Academy will take on Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in 3A. If Upper St. Clair and North Catholic win their semifinal games, it could lead to four girls' teams representing WPIAL at the finals in Hershey. The boys' top team is Upper St. Clair, while Peters Township leads the girls' rankings.
