Xi inaugurates China's first port in South America in Peru
Chinese President Xi Jinping inaugurated South America's first Chinese-funded port in Chancay, Peru, on November 14, 2024. The $3.5 billion port, located about 50 miles north of Lima, aims to enhance trade connectivity between China and South America. The port is part of China's Belt and Road Initiative and will serve as a hub for imports and exports, benefiting not only Peru but also neighboring countries like Chile and Colombia. It is expected to handle up to one million containers in its first year. Xi emphasized the port's role in promoting trade and reducing shipping times. The facility is designed to accommodate large container ships and is described as a "smart and green port."
