Xi Jinping opens South America's first Chinese-funded port in Peru
Chinese President Xi Jinping inaugurated South America's first Chinese-funded port in Chancay, Peru, on Thursday. The $3.5 billion port aims to enhance Chinese trade in the region amid rising tensions with a potential new Trump administration in the U.S. The port, located about 50 miles north of Lima, was opened during a virtual ceremony with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte. Xi emphasized the importance of connectivity between China and South America, while Boluarte acknowledged China's role in Peru's economic growth. U.S. officials have cautioned Latin American countries to be vigilant regarding Chinese investments. They stressed the need for compliance with local laws and protections for human rights and the environment.
