Yankees may trade for Nolan Arenado from Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals attempted to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado over the offseason. They nearly sent him to the Houston Astros, but he vetoed the move. After Alex Bregman joined the Boston Red Sox, it seemed unlikely that Arenado would be traded. Recently, however, a new situation has arisen that might reopen the possibility. The New York Yankees are looking for a third baseman due to an injury to D.J. LeMahieu. According to a report, the team is motivated to find a right-handed hitter to complement Oswaldo Cabrera, who is a switch hitter but performs better from the left side. Cabrera and Oswald Peraza have been starting at third base while LeMahieu is out. Peraza has struggled this spring, with a low batting average. The Yankees have not fully trusted him as a regular starter. Although the Yankees seem to be seeking more of a supporting player, a trade for Arenado remains a possibility. Arenado could provide a significant boost to the Yankees' offense, especially since Giancarlo Stanton is also out for a while. For St. Louis, trading Arenado could open up third base for Nolan Gorman and create more room for Thomas Saggese. This could help the Cardinals continue their plans for a youth movement as they prepare for the future, reducing the number of trades they need to consider later on.
