Yankees test Goldschmidt in leadoff spot during training
Paul Goldschmidt could soon take on a new role with the New York Yankees. In his 14-year MLB career, he has never batted leadoff. That may change this season as the Yankees test the idea during spring training. Goldschmidt, a seasoned player with an impressive track record, has played 1,928 games in the majors. He has won an MVP Award, earned four Gold Gloves, and achieved multiple seasons with over 30 home runs. The Yankees want him to bat first in the lineup against left-handed pitchers. The goal is to set up strong hitting for Aaron Judge, creating a powerful one-two punch. After a recent spring training game, Goldschmidt commented, "It was kind of fun, and obviously it was a little different." He noted that he has hit in many positions during his career. For him, each at-bat remains the same, focused on competing and doing his best. Goldschmidt mentioned that he hasn't led off since high school. Traditionally, a player like him, with a strong batting average, fits better in the middle of the lineup. Baseball strategies have evolved, valuing players who can get on base and hit for power. The Yankees might also experiment with Austin Wells, their catcher, leading off against right-handed pitchers. This would be a first for the franchise, as they have never had a catcher in that spot. Overall, Goldschmidt seems open to the new challenge ahead of the season.
