Yankees tie Rays 3-3 in spring training game
The New York Yankees played a spring training game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. The game ended in a 3-3 tie in Tampa. There were both positive and negative aspects to take away from the game. On the positive side, catcher Austin Wells hit his fourth home run and is batting .372. Shortstop Anthony Volpe also hit a home run to right field. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt played for seven innings and recorded one hit. Pitcher Max Fried made progress in his last appearance before the regular season, pitching into the sixth inning. However, Fried struggled with his control, allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings. He walked three batters and threw only 49 strikes. Aaron Judge, who hit a home run the previous day, had a tough game and is now batting .129 this spring with 17 strikeouts in 31 at-bats. Fans may not need to worry about Judge’s performance since he had a slow start last year as well. Fried, meanwhile, feels confident despite his command issues. He is happy with his progress and pitch count ahead of the season. The Yankees managed to score all their runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by home runs from Wells and Volpe. Notably, the team made more roster cuts after the game. Looking ahead, the Yankees will play against the Mets on Monday and the Marlins on Tuesday. Opening Day is on Thursday when they host the Brewers.
