Athletics second baseman Zack Gelof will have surgery on his right hand and will start the season on the injured list. The surgery is scheduled for Monday. Gelof suffered a fracture in his hamate bone after being hit by a pitch during a game against Cleveland. An MRI exam confirmed the injury. Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles will perform the operation. Manager Mark Kotsay announced the news during spring training on Sunday. Gelof, 25 years old, was selected in the second round of the 2021 amateur draft out of Virginia. Last season, he played in 138 games, hitting .211 with 17 home runs, 49 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases.
