He died in a San Francisco hospital, leaving behind a significant legacy in music education and performance. Hussain won four Grammy Awards, including three in 2024, and was known for his role in popularizing Indian classical music globally. He co-founded the fusion group Shakti and collaborated with various artists across genres. In addition to his music career, Hussain composed for films and received several prestigious awards, including India's Padma Vibhushan. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
