Zakir Hussain, acclaimed Indian tabla player, dies at 73 in San Francisco
Zakir Hussain, a renowned Indian classical musician and tabla player, passed away at 73 on Sunday in San Francisco. He died from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease, according to his family. Hussain was celebrated for his contributions to music over a six-decade career, collaborating with various artists across genres. He was the son of legendary tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha and began performing as a child. In 2024, Hussain made history by winning three Grammy awards in one year. He was also honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 2023, India's second-highest civilian award. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
