Zoji La tunnel enhances Kashmir-Ladakh travel experience

Work is progressing on the Zoji La tunnel, a 14.2 km project that will connect Sonamarg in Kashmir to Minamarg in Ladakh. So far, crews have completed 10.5 km of excavation. This tunnel includes a unique feature called a snow gallery, which has 70 windows allowing travelers to enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The area beyond the mountains in Kashmir opens up to Baltal, a popular base camp for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. For many years, this route was dangerous and often closed during winter. However, the new tunnel aims to provide safe, all-weather access. Engineer Burhan Andrabi explained that the snow gallery will let people step out during quieter times to take in breathtaking sights of the valley and peaks. Unlike traditional tunnels that cut travelers off from nature, the Zoji La tunnel is designed to enhance the experience. It has strong walls to guard against avalanches, while large windows on one side allow for spectacular views without compromising safety. Col AK Shivkumar, the project head, noted that the wide road will enable smoother traffic flow, and designated pull-over spots will let passengers admire the scenery. Construction is ongoing, with a full breakthrough expected by January 2026, and the entire project should be completed by 2028. The nearby Z-Morh tunnel, opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January, has already improved travel to Sonamarg. Together, these tunnels will make the journey faster and reduce travel distance, but the focus remains on the beautiful experience they offer. The Zoji La snow gallery aims to be a true portal to the breathtaking Himalayan wilderness.
